Science Week in P4
P4 Science Week:
A Colourful End to the Year
P4 asked for a little bit of science before the year finished… so we turned it into a full Science Week packed with hands‑on experiments, curious questions and plenty of excitement.
We began by exploring skittles diffusion. After arranging Skittles into creative patterns, we added warm water and watched the colours spread out in beautiful swirling designs. The class loved seeing how the sugar coating dissolved and travelled through the water.
Next, we tested whether water could travel through kitchen paper. We set up cups of coloured water connected by paper towels and were amazed to see water move into empty cups. The children were fascinated to discover that water can “walk” using capillary action.
We then experimented with baking soda and vinegar reactions, adding food colouring to make the fizzing eruptions even more dramatic. The class observed how mixing an acid and a base creates gas.
To finish the week, we used the same reaction to see if we could inflate a balloon using the gas produced. The excitement in the room was brilliant as balloons began to lift and expand all on their own.
It was a fun filled week with lots of laughter and lots of learning.
