P4 Explore Settings of Stories during Bookweek NI
As part of Bookweek NI we discussed our favourite books and explored what made them our favourite. We talked about the beginnings of stories and discovered how important a setting is in helping us create an image in our mind. The pupils accurately drew a setting on their whiteboards that I described in detail for them. They struggled to draw the second setting because they realised there wasn't enough information given. They told me, 'You haven't really told us anything. There isn't enough detail.'
We looked at images of different settings and thought about words we might use. We used our senses to help us as a way to begin to create a vivid image for the setting. The pupil's sensory language was fantastic. They spent some time thinking themselves about the setting they had been given and then in partners/small groups had to exchange their ideas. Lastly they created a short setting for the image they had been given.
I was very impressed with the ideas, discussion and questions we had. A great start to our story work and reinforced in Bookweek NI part of the work of authors. Well done P4!
