Our chicks have hatched!

29th May 2025

On our return from The Easter Holidays, we noticed a nest had been built in our outside area. When we discovered there were 2 eggs inside, it caused great excitement amongst the children and the staff. This spontaneous activity has led our planning over these past few weeks. Every day we had children on ‘bird watch’, monitoring the nest to see the comings and goings of the mummy and daddy bird. We discussed what a bird would need to survive in the warm weather and checked that we had a water supply and food available.
A week later we had a little peek into the nest and discovered there were now 6 eggs in the nest. The children used their mental maths to work out how many more eggs had been laid. Over the next week we discussed the life cycle of a bird incorporating this theme into our play-based learning and topic work.

On 15th May we were delighted to share the news that the eggs had hatched! We had to be very careful we didn’t disturb the nest and give mummy and daddy bird space to bring the new little chicks food. From a distance we watched the parents’ bringing food to the little chicks. Now we watch with anticipation to see when the chicks will leave their nest.
