Our aim for this was to integrate technology with creative arts, focusing on skills like digital painting, photography and animation. We read stories of Elmer the colourful elephant in Literacy and collected lots of patterned paper, prints and patterned clothing to create milk carton collage Elmers. Our next step was to use the app ‘Elmer’s Photo Patchwork’ to capture photographs of different prints in each section of Elmer’s body. This required a steady hand, ensuring the I-pad cover was tucked away and zooming closely to get just patterns rather than the floor or a desk in the background. We quickly discovered that it was easier to spread the patterns all over the classroom floor and travel to a new one each time to complete the patchwork body, being careful to only use the same print far away from the first picture. We were so pleased with our new patchwork elephants that we decided to be a little more creative and name our elephants, explain what their magic trick was and what they liked to eat!
