Active Maths in Primary 1!

1st Apr 2026
This half term, Primary 1 have started learning the names of 3D shapes. The best way to explore their properties has been through hands-on sorting activities. We were able to recall the 2D shapes within each 3D shape and created our own criteria to sort them. We discovered that some shapes can roll, and that a cube looks just like a dice.

Using ladybirds as a fun resource, we have been making number families up to 10. In Term 3, we will focus on recalling these facts mentally and begin adding numbers within 10.

We are becoming very confident at telling o’clock times. Using playdough, we created clock faces and made the hands ourselves. We know that the short hand shows the hour, and when the long hand points to 12, it means it is o’clock.

The children were very excited to become “human robots,” programming each other to follow instructions along a path. We set out cones and gave directions to move around a square. We then applied these skills using the Bee-Bots, learning commands such as forward, backward, and turn. Some of us are still practising our left and right, but overall—fantastic learning in Primary 1!
