BBC Newsline Visit

27th Feb 2019

BBC Newsline reporters visited our school today to discuss online safety. Mr O’ Neill explained to them that our school is very proactive in keeping our children safe online not only in relation to the latest MoMo challenge, but due to ongoing esafety lessons our children are very aware of the SMART rules and what to do when they see/hear something they are not comfortable with.

The reporters visited the P5 children who told them their experiences of seeing or hearing about MoMo. They spoke very clearly about how they used the advice given by the Superheroes in their recent assembly: ‘R’ - not all information on the internet is Reliable and  ‘T’ -  (tell a trusted adult!).

MOMO

The Internet is awesome,
I love to watch online,
I do my homework every night,
Then after dinner time,
I settle down with headphones in,
And watch upon the screen,
My favourites tubers,
Showing me,
How cool their day has been.
From gamers to celebrities,
And those who like to chat,
Tricks and stunts and sports,
And videos of people’s cats.
But today it all turned nasty,
As my space had been invaded,
The channel that I always watch,
Had someone masqueraded,
As a friend sent in to challenge me,
And scare me head to toe,
A guest I’d not invited in,
They called themselves Momo.
Telling me to click a link,
Or do a stupid dare,
Or show me something nasty,
And they really didn’t care,
That I go online for fun stuff,
To share things with my friends,
And so I did the best I could,
To make sure that it ends,
As I told the nearest adult,
(In my case my Uncle Dave)
Who sat me down and listened,
And he made me feel quite brave,
As I told him all that happened,
And he made sure that I knew,
That it wasn’t me in trouble,
And he knew just what to do,
To sort out all our apps,
So I would not see it again,
And I think that is the message,
That I’d really like to send.
That if Momo comes a knocking,
And they pop up on your screen,
Tell a carer, tell a teacher,
Tell an adult what you’ve seen,
As no-one wants this rubbish,
When they’re chilling out online,
Keep it safe and keep it fun,
And we will all be mighty fine.

We are all looking forward to the BBC news report, which will hopefully be aired tomorrow evening.
